At Meemah & Bone, we’re all about making pets feel safe, happy, and loved—especially during the holidays. While Halloween is a festive time for families, it can be confusing or even scary for pets. From constant doorbell rings and loud costumes to tempting treats that can be harmful, there are several hazards to keep in mind.

Here are a few simple, practical tips to help your pets stay calm and safe this Halloween.

  1. Keep Trick-or-Treat Night Low-Stress

The steady stream of strangers, unusual sights and sounds, and repeated doorbell rings can be overwhelming for dogs and cats.

Tips to reduce stress:

  • Set up a quiet, comfortable space in a room away from the front door where your pet can retreat and relax.
  • Use white noise machines, soft music, or calming TV shows to help mask the sound of activity outside.
  • Close the curtains or blinds to limit visual stimulation from costumes and porch lights.
  • Leave a bowl of candy outside with a note kindly asking visitors not to knock or ring the bell.
  1. Keep the Candy Out of Reach

Many Halloween treats are dangerous for pets, even in small amounts.

What to watch out for:

  • Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both toxic to dogs and cats.
  • Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in gum and sugar-free candy, can cause serious health problems for dogs.
  • Wrappers and packaging can pose choking risks or lead to intestinal blockages if swallowed.

Make sure all candy is stored securely in sealed containers, and talk to kids about why sharing Halloween treats with pets is never a good idea.

  1. Choose Costumes Carefully

Dressing up pets can be fun, but not every animal enjoys it—and some costumes can cause discomfort or even injury.

Costume safety tips:

  • Stick to soft, lightweight materials that don’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing.
  • Avoid costumes with small pieces that could be chewed off and swallowed.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of stress, such as stiff posture, excessive scratching, or attempts to remove the costume.

Try the costume on well in advance and only dress your pet up for short periods, if at all.

  1. Plan Ahead for a Calmer Night

Taking a few extra steps can go a long way in making Halloween night smoother for both you and your pet. In addition to creating a calm environment, make sure your pet has:

  • A fully updated ID tag or microchip in case they accidentally slip outside
  • A full belly and exercise earlier in the day to help them relax
  • Their favorite toy or blanket nearby to provide a sense of comfort

A Little Preparation Makes a Big Difference

Halloween is meant to be a night of fun—not fear. With just a little planning, you can help your pets stay safe, comfortable, and anxiety-free throughout the evening.
